Acidic or alkaline?

Is your body acidic or alkaline? Too much acidity in your body will create a perfect ground to welcome all kinds of health problems. How do you find out? You test yourself. This is pretty simple. Buy some pH test paper in a drugstore and each morning when you get up, test your saliva and your urine. The readings should be between 6.5 and 7.5 – below or above is no good. Since this kind of test may not be totally accurate, get a blood test from time to time so you know exactly where you’re at.

If you tested and the results show that you’re acidic, you need to work your way up by providing your body with a diet that is more alkaline than acidic. Don’t be surprised if you’re acidic, the majority of the population is and this is a major reason why we have so many illnesses (despite the fact of top-notch medical research). All right, you’re acidic. How are you going to remedy this?

I recommend that you read Alkalize or Die: Superior Health Through Proper Alkaline-Acid Balance from Dr. Theodore A. Baroody. The book will give a clear understanding on how your body functions and why having an acidic environment will eventually cause your body to stop functioning properly. Dr Baroody explains in layman terms how the body’s alkaline reserve works and the need for it for the various glands and organs. In short, in order to keep your alkaline reserve to its optimal level, you should eat a diet where 80% of your foods are alkaline-forming and 20% are acid-forming.

Dr Baroody’s book has an amazing explanation of the function of the vagus nerve which if pinched will produce an acid residue. If you have back aches or out of place vertebrae, chances are your vagus nerve is pinched and your body is producing unwanted acidity. This is when you need to get the ossature back in its correct position. A good chiropractor will do that for you.

Let’s go back to the diet. How do you know what to eat? What are the foods that are alkaline-forming and what foods are acid-forming? As a big sweeping statement, I’ll say that anything with sugar in it will be on the acid-forming side. But there is definitely a lot more to it than that.

Dr Baroody’s book is part of my kitchen cookbooks. It lists just about any food and indicates its pH level. Not only that, but the book shows as well how you can balance your meals and work out the acidic-alkaline ratio within a day, so in the end you’re eating 80% alkaline-forming foods and 20% acid-forming foods on a daily basis. You’ll even find 20 pages of suggested recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
